Fatsaun Smith was injured while riding a fixed-gear bicycle on Tyler State Park on Friday.

The bicycles, which feature no hand brakes, originated in the type of racing done in velodromes, the "NASCAR for bike racing," said Scott Wueschinski, owner of Bucks County Bicycle Co. in Falls.

The bike chain is linked to a fixed cog, explained Wueschinski. These types of bikes don't freewheel, like standard bikes do, so they can't coast because the pedals are always in motion, he said.

Fixed-gear bicycles are often seen in cities, such as Philadelphia, where most of the street surfaces are flat. 

It's younger riders who are purchasing fixed-gear bicycles because they are inexpensive, easy to assemble and light because they don't have a fully geared drivetrain, Wueschinski said. But many riders add brakes since cities are enforcing the safety feature, he said.

To stop a "fixie", as they are known, riders have other options to stop.

One of the easiest ways — in a non-emergency — is to slow down the pedaling speed, which will decrease the forward motion and bring the rider to a natural stop.
