AR Day Celebrates Reading With Turtles
Written on Shore News Today Jun 15, 2011
Staff Writer
VENTNOR – It was a pirate’s life for the students Friday, June 10 at the Ventnor Educational Community Complex as students celebrated a school year full of reading accomplishments.
Accelerated Reading Day was transformed into A.R.rrgh Day as school librarian Debbie Brahmi donned her captain’s hat and set her sights on reading excellence alongside first mate and library aide Tetje Linsk.
To help celebrate achieving nearly 45,000 A.R. points, the school welcomed Robin Scott from Ray Scott’s Dock along with Capt. Ed Giacomucci of Margate and John Wnek, supervisor of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science in Manahawkin.
Together the special guests and mascot “scoots” stressed the importance of being a good steward of the barrier island, which includes preserving the population of the diamondback terrapin turtles.
Students learned the importance of keeping turtles out of the roadways to ensure a healthy turtle population and using a bycatch reduction device on commercial crab traps that prevents turtles from being caught while still allowing crabs to enter the trap.
